Fashion designer John Galliano has spoken out for the first time since 2011, when he was fired as Dior creative director for making anti-Semitic remarks in a Parisian cafe.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the former head creative of Givenchy, Christian Dior and his own namesake collection talked to the VF contributing editor Ingrid Sischy about his past bouts with drug addiction and future in fashion. Galliano also explained that he never meant to hurt anyone with his outburst.
“It’s the worst thing I have said in my life, but I didn’t mean it. I have been trying to find out why that anger was directed at this race. I now realize I was so fucking angry and so discontent with myself that I just said the most spiteful thing I could.”
Legion d’Honneur after being convicted of making anti-Semetic remarks, has been sober for more than two years, admitting to Sischy that their interview is the first that he’s ever done sober.
He “never drank in order to be creative, or to do the research,” he told VF. But rather his addiction to alcohol kicked in when drinking after showing his line during Fashion Week. “Then I would use it to crash after the collections. I’d take a couple of days to get over it, like everyone. But with more collections, the crash happened more often, and then I was a slave to it.” Eventually, his addiction led to pills.
Galliano shared that he was confronted by both Dior CEO Sidney Toledano and LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault on two separate occasions about seeking help with his unhealthy lifestyle.

On March 1, 2011, Galliano entered an Arizona rehab facility. While there, supermodel Kate Moss contacted him to design her wedding dress, which was discussed while he was still at Dior.
“Creating Kate’s wedding dress saved me personally because it was my creative rehab. She dared me to be me again.”
